Introduction
The printer's Carriage is not accepting one or more of the print cartridges. Typical causes are dirty contacts on cartridges or Carriage, defective cartridge(s), or a defective Carriage. Follow the steps listed in this document to accurately determine the cause of the failure and to replace the appropriate parts.
Required parts (part numbers are subject to change)
Part description
| Models C3198A/B |
Carriage Assembly (Required) - Order Refurbished Carriage if available, only send new Carriage if Refurbished Carriage is not available |
C4708-69113 (Refurbished) C4708-60113 (New) |
Trailing Cable (Required) |
C3195-80009 |
Ink Cartridges (Optional) |
51645A, 51644C, 51644M, 51644Y |
Troubleshooting steps
- Troubleshoot the Ink cartridges one at a time (with the other three removed). Check that each cartridge is accepted (steady filled-in box).
- Clean the contacts on the Carriage and cartridges, and reinstall per instructions in Step 1.
NOTE: Try a known good cartridge in the failing slot to help determine if the problem is the carriage or the cartridge. The black cartridge cannot be substituted.
- Replace ink cartridges as needed.
- If replacing the cartridges does not resolve the issue, continue with Step 5.
- Tighten the X-axis gear if printer is failing Printhead alignment.
- Replace the Carriage and Trailing cable.
- Perform the calibrations listed below:
Drop Detect calibration
- Switch the printer ON.
- Press the ENTER button.
- Use the ARROW button to scroll to the Utilities menu display.
- Press the ENTER button.
- Simultaneously press the ENTER and the UP ARROW buttons to access the Service Tests submenu.
- Use the ARROW button to scroll to 1C Drop Detect Cal and press ENTER.
- The display shows the message Calibrating indicating that the calibration is in progress. Press ENTER when the calibration is complete.
- Stay in Service mode for the next calibration.
Line Sensor calibration
- In the Service Test submenu, scroll to 2C Line sensor cal and press ENTER.
- The display will show Calibrating Green LED Light, indicating the calibration is in progress.
- When the calibration is complete, the display will show Green LED Light # _ _ / press Enter. The number shown corresponds to the intensity of the LED light, which will vary for different types of media. The normal range of the number should be between 0 and 56.
- Press ENTER when the calibration is complete and stay in Service mode.
Accuracy calibration
- Use a sheet approximately 24 x 36 inches, or roll media. To get the best results for an accuracy calibration, a polyester/matte film should be used.
NOTE: If a polyester or matte film is not available use HP Coated media when performing an accuracy calibration.
- Remove any media already loaded in the printer before performing the calibration.
- In the Service Tests submenu, scroll to 3C Accuracy Cal and press ENTER.
- Select Create when the Create pattern / Measure pattern message is displayed.
- The Status / Calibrating message is displayed while the printer is calibrating.
- When the printer has finished calibrating, the Load media for calibration message is displayed.
- Load the media. If using D-size media, load the short edge as the leading edge in D-size printers and the long edge as the leading edge in E-size printers.
- When the media is loaded, the printer will automatically begin to plot the pattern.
- A "Status / Printing" message is displayed while printing.
- Remove the media when prompted.
- The "Create pattern / Measure pattern" message is displayed.
- Press the DOWN ARROW button to select Measure Pattern.
- Load the plot so the edge with the arrows points toward the printer, and reload the plot with the print side down.
- Select Sheet Load by pressing the UP ARROW.
- The printer will load the plot and Status / Measuring will be displayed while the line sensor on the carriage measures the alignment marks.
- If the calibration passes, the "Calibration Done / Continue" message is displayed.
- Press the DOWN ARROW to continue.
- The "Status / Ready for Media" message will be displayed.
- If the calibration is unsuccessful, tighten the X-axis gear.
- Turn the printer Off then On to save calibration to the EEROM.
Verify functionality
Turn the printer Off then On and print several internal plots "E" or "D" size.
