Introduction
The printer is making unusual noises when media advances. The most common causes of this issue are the
x-motor
assembly, the cluster
gear, or the overdrive clutch. Follow the steps listed in this document to accurately determine the cause of the noise and to replace the appropriate parts.
Parts required (part numbers are subject to change)
Troubleshooting steps
- Load a sheet of media to determine if the rollfeed assembly is causing the noise.
- Note the location of the noise. If the noise is coming from the right side, perform troubleshooting procedures for the x-motor. If the noise is coming from the left side, perform troubleshooting procedures for the overdrive assembly, the cluster gear, and the clutch.
- Replace parts as needed.
Accuracy calibration
- Place a sheet of polyester film over the top of the printer for approximately 10 minutes to stabilize the paper to environmental conditions. Use a sheet of approximately D-size (24 x 36 in/ 61 x 91 cms). Roll media may also be used. When using polyester film, load it with the matte (dull) side down.
NOTE: If a polyester or matte film is not available, use HP Coated media when performing an accuracy calibration.
- Turn the printer On.
- Press ENTER.
- Use the arrow buttons to scroll to the Utilities menu.
- Press ENTER.
- Simultaneously press ENTER and the UP Arrow buttons to access the Service Tests submenu.
- Remove any media that is already loaded in the printer before performing the calibration.
- In the Service Tests submenu, scroll to 3C Accuracy Cal, and press ENTER.
- "Status Calibrating" will appear during calibrating.
- When the calibration is finished, "Load Media for Calibration" is displayed.
- Load the media. If using D-size media, load the short edge as the leading edge in D-size printers and the long edge as the leading edge in E-size printers.
- After the media is loaded, the printer will automatically begin to plot a pattern.
- "Status Printing" will appear on the display while plotting.
- Remove the media when the printer is finished.
- "Create Pattern/Measure Pattern" will appear on the display.
- Press the DOWN arrow button to select Measure Pattern.
- Rotate the media so the edge with the arrows point toward the printer, and reload the media with the arrow edge print-side down.
- The printer will load the media, and measure the alignment marks using the line sensor on the carriage.
- If the calibration passes, the "Success Calibration/Press Enter" message will appear on the display.
- Press the PREVIOUS button back to Ready, and turn off and turn on the printer to save the calibrations.
Verifying functionality
Turn the printer off, then on, and print several E or D size internal plots.
