The Carriage does not accept one or more of the
print
cartridges. Typical causes include dirty contacts on the
cartridges or carriage,
defective
cartridges, or a defective carriage and trailing
cable. Follow the steps listed in this document to accurately determine the failure cause and to replace the appropriate parts.
Required parts (part numbers are subject to change)
Troubleshooting steps
- Clean the electrical contacts on the carriage and
cartridges with a lint-free cloth, dampened with water. Allow the electrical contacts to dry before continuing.
- Reinstall the
ink cartridges and see if they work. If problems persist, follow the remaining steps.
- Troubleshoot the
ink cartridges one at a time (with the other one removed). If the printer rejects the cartridge, a "Replace pen message" appears that corresponds with either the left or right pen. Replace the failing pen with a new one and check whether that resolves the issue. If problems persist, continue with the remaining steps.
NOTE: When pinpointing whether the issue is a problem with the carriage or the ink cartridges, try a known good cartridge in a failing slot.
- If cleaning contacts and replacing the ink cartridges does not solve the problem, replace the carriage and trailing cable, as detailed below.
Replace the carriage and trailing cable
- Replace the carriage and trailing cable.
- After assembly turn on the printer.
- Load ink cartridges into the new carriage.
- If the printer accepts the ink cartridges, run the Edge Sense calibration.
NOTE: Performing an Accuracy calibration after replacing the carriage and trailing cable is recommended, but is not required.
- If the
ink cartridges are not accepted, continue with replacing the Interconnect PCA.
Replace the Interconnect PCA
- Replace the Interconnect PCA.
- Perform the Edge Sense and Accuracy calibrations as listed below.
Perform an Edge Sense calibration
- Press ENTER at the Status display.
- Use the arrows to scroll to the Utilities main menu. Press ENTER.
- Simultaneously press the ENTER and UP arrow to access the Service Test menu.
- Scroll to Edge Sense Calib, and press ENTER.
NOTE: Messages on the display will inform you when to load media for the calibration to proceed. Part of the calibration procedure is an automatic performance of the pen alignment procedure. The calibration takes approximately four minutes to complete.
Accuracy calibration
- Use a sheet approximately 24 x 36 inches, or roll media. For the best results for an Accuracy calibration, use a polyester/matte film.
NOTE: If a polyester or matte film is not available, use HP coated media when performing an Accuracy calibration.
- Load the media. If using D-size media (24 x 36 inches) load the short edge as the leading edge in 24-inch models, and the long edge as the leading edge for 36-inch models. E-size media (36 x 48 inches) can also be used on 36-inch models.
- Press ENTER at the Status display.
- Use the arrows to scroll to the Utilities menu, and press ENTER. Set menu mode to full, if not already in full mode.
- Simultaneously press the ENTER and UP arrow to access the Service Test menu.
- Using the arrows, scroll to Accuracy Calib, and press ENTER.
- Press the UP arrow to select Create Plot. A Creating Calibration Plot message will be displayed.
- Wait until the Remove media/Continue message displays, then remove the media.
- Press the DOWN arrow to Continue. The Create plot/Measure plot message appears.
- Press the DOWN arrow to select Measure Plot.
- Rotate the plot so the edge with arrows points to the leading edge. Reload the plot with print side down.
- The printer will load the plot and measure the alignment marks using the Edge sensor on the pen Carriage.
- Press the DOWN arrow to continue when the Calibrate done/Continue message appears and the plot is fed out. The Accuracy calibration is now complete.
- Verify printer functionality. Perform media loading procedure with roll and sheet (preferably larger than 8.5 x 11) media, two times each.
