Vertical Line Straightness (VLS) issues can be caused by several factors. The most common causes of VLS are dirty or defective
cartridges, dirty or damaged
encoder
strip, worn belt, or a faulty
Carriage or
Trailing
cable. This document provides instructions to quickly ascertain the cause and the parts necessary to solve the issue.
Parts required (part numbers are subject to change)
NOTE: The Mono PQ plot should be used to verify whether the problem is resolved. The Mono PQ plot is listed in the Service Tests submenu, and can be performed in Unidirectional mode, and Bidirectional mode.
Troubleshoot the ink cartridges
- Remove the
ink
cartridges, and clean the electrical contacts on the carriage and cartridges. Use a lint-free cloth dampened with water.
- If cleaning the contacts does not resolve the issue, replace the ink cartridges.
- If replacing cartridges is no help, continue with the remaining steps.
Clean/replace the
encoder
strip, and lubricate the carriage rails
- Slide the carriage all the way to the left or right side of the printer.
- Using a lint-free cloth dampened with water, clean the
encoder
strip. If the encoder strip is damaged, replace as needed.
- Inspect the
carriage belt for excessive wear or damage, and replace if needed.
- Lubricate the carriage
rails.
- If problems persist, continue by replacing the carriage and
trailing
cable.
Replace the carriage and trailing cable
- Replace the
carriage and
trailing
cable.
- Perform the calibrations in the order listed below.
Drop Detect calibration
- Turn the printer on.
- Press ENTER.
- Using the Arrow key, scroll to Utilities and press ENTER.
- Simultaneously press the ENTER and the Up Arrow keys to access the Service Tests submenu.
- Scroll to 1C Drop Detect Cal, and press ENTER.
- The printer will display the message Calibrating, indicating that the calibration is in progress.
- Press ENTER when the calibration is complete.
- Stay in Service mode to perform the next calibration.
Line Sensor calibration
- In the Service test submenu, scroll to 2C Line sensor cal, and press ENTER.
- The printer will display the message Calibrating Green LED Light, indicating that calibration is in progress.
- When the calibration is complete, the printer will display Green LED Light # _ _ / press Enter. The number shown corresponds to the intensity of the LED light, which will vary for different types of media. The normal range of the number should be between 0 and 56.
- Press ENTER when the calibration is complete.
- Stay in Service mode to perform the next calibration.
Accuracy calibration
- Place a sheet of polyester film over the top of the printer for approximately 10 minutes to let it stabilize to the environmental conditions. Use a sheet of approximately D-size (61 x 91 cm, 24 x 36 inches). Roll media may also be used. When using polyester film, load it with the matte (dull) side down.
NOTE: If a polyester or matte film is not available, use HP coated media when performing an accuracy calibration.
- Remove all media already loaded in the printer before performing the calibration.
- In the Service Tests submenu, scroll to 3C Accuracy Cal, and press ENTER.
- The message Create pattern/measure pattern, appears.
- Press the Up Arrow key to select Create pattern.
- The message Status/Calibrating, appears while the printer is calibrating.
- When the printer is finished calibrating, the message Load media for calibration appears.
- Load the media. If using D-size media (HP part, 51642A), load the short edge as the leading edge in D-size printers and the long edge as the leading edge in E-size printers (E-size media, HP part, 51642B).
- When the media is loaded, the printer will automatically begin to plot the pattern.
- The message Status/Printing appears while printing.
- Remove the media when the printer is finished printing.
- The message Create pattern/Measure pattern appears.
- Press the Down Arrow key to select Measure Pattern.
- Rotate the plot so the edge with the arrows point toward the printer, and reload the plot with the arrow edge print-side down.
- The printer will load the plot and measure the alignment marks using the line sensor on the Carriage.
- If the calibration passes, the message Success Calibration/Press Enter appears.
- Press the PREVIOUS key until Ready is displayed on the printer's front panel.
- Turn off and turn on the printer to verify functionality.
