HP Designjet CP Series Printers - Switch Power off, Check Printhead Path

In this document:

The printhead carriage cannot move. Common causes are obstructions in the carriage path, excess friction along the carriage path, the cutter not reaching the home position, and worn or damaged Y-axis parts. Follow the steps listed in this document to accurately determine the cause of the failure and replace the appropriate parts.

Troubleshooting stepsback to table of contents

If parts are replaced or fixed in any of the steps listed below, attempt to verify printer functionality by turning the printer on and printing internal test prints. If functionality is verified, no additional parts should be replaced.

  1. Turn printer off using the power switch on the back of the printer.
  2. Unload media and check for obstructions in the carriage path.
  3. Check for jammed media. If jammed, follow the steps directly below. If no media jam is detected, continue with Step 4.
    1. Slide the cartridge carriage out of the way toward either side of the enclosed ends of the printer (if needed).
    2. Lift the media release lever.
    3. Remove any of the jammed media that is easy to lift up and out from the top of the printer.
    4. Pull the rest of the roll or sheet media down and out of the entry slot where the paper is loaded.
    5. Check around the ends, front, and rear edges of the platen roller to verify that all of the torn paper is removed. A manila folder can be used to remove jammed media from the media path. Be careful not to damage the Media sensor on the right side of the printer.
    6. Lower the printer's cover and lever, and then turn the printer on. After the printer initializes, press the Form Feed and Cut key to eject any pieces of paper that might still be in the paper path.
    7. Reload the media as normal. If using roll, trim the edge so the media is straight before re-loading, to avoid another jam.
    8. If loading is successful, repeat the loading procedure with both roll and sheet paper (preferably larger than 8.5 x 11) two times each, to prove product functionality. If functionality is proven, no parts need to be replaced.
    9. If loading is unsuccessful or problems persist, continue with Step 4.
  4. Clean and lubricate the carriage rails. Remove all foreign objects from the carriage rails and make sure the end stops are free of any contaminants that could be causing the carriage not to reach home position (both end covers may need to be removed to clearly see the entire carriage path).
  1. Gently clean the encoder strip with a lint free cloth dampened with water. Check carriage and encoder interaction (the carriage and encoder should not touch anywhere along the y-axis). Check for proper encoder installation (holes on each end should be down; if not, reinstall correctly). If needed, replace the encoder strip. Attempt to verify functionality before continuing with remaining steps.
  2. Visually inspect the Y-axis belt for damage or wear and replace if necessary (refer to pages 8-39 of the service manual). Attempt to verify functionality before continuing.
  3. Make sure the rubber tabs (pictured in Figure 1) on both ends of the overdrive are not obstructing the carriage or cutter movement. The corners of the rubber tabs may pull up, or the entire tab may have moved causing an obstruction in the carriage or cutter path. Reposition tabs as needed, and attempt to verify functionality.
  1. If problems persist, continue with the D03 Carriage Axis diagnostic test.

Performing the D03 Carriage Axis (Y-Axis) diagnostic testback to table of contents

  1. Make sure the printer is turned off from the power switch on the back of the printer.
  2. Hold the Up Arrow and Enter keys down while turning the printer on.
  1. Once the message Status/Ready is displayed on the front panel, press the Enter key.
  2. Use the Arrow keys to scroll to Utilities and press Enter.
  3. Scroll to Service Tests and press Enter.
  4. Scroll to Diagnostics and press Enter.
  5. Scroll to D03 Carriage Axis and press Enter.
  6. While the test is being performed, a row of *** (asteriks) will appear on the front panel.
  7. If the test passes (not expected) a D0300 OK message will be displayed. Turn the printer off, then on and attempt to verify functionality.
  8. If the test fails or problems persist, lubricate the carriage rails and perform the D03 Carriage Axis diagnostic test again.
  9. If the D03 diagnostic test fails the second time, replace the Y-axis motor, Y-tensioner, Y-pulley, and the Y-axis belt (if not already replaced). Refer to pages 8-39, 8-45 of the service manual.
  10. Attempt to verify functionality. If problems persist, continue with the remaining steps.
  11. Turn the printer off.
  12. Replace the Trailing cable, Cutter assembly, and the Cutter bushing.
  13. Perform calibrations C02, C03, and C08 (instructions listed below). All other calibrations will be completed when the printer is turned on in Normal mode (during printer initialization).

Performing Service Calibrationsback to table of contents

Following each calibration, turn the printer off to store the new calibration values in the EEROM. Turn the printer on (entering Service mode) and perform the next required calibration. Repeat this cycle until all necessary calibrations have been performed.

  1. Make sure the printer is turned off from the power switch on the back of the printer.
  2. Hold the Up Arrow key and the Enter key down while turning the printer on.
  1. Once the message Status/Ready is displayed on the front panel, press Enter.
  2. Use the Arrow keys to scroll to the Utilities menu display and press Enter.
  3. Scroll to Service Tests and press Enter.
  4. Scroll to Service Calibrations and press Enter.
  5. Use the Arrow keys to scroll through the specific calibrations and press Enter when the required calibration is displayed.
