Hewlett-Packard guarantees support for five years after the end of production of its large format printers. Since the HP Designjet 650C has been out of production for a number of years, the parts and sub-assemblies may no longer be available to complete the repair. If the customer has a service agreement or contract, follow normal contract call logging processes (regardless of parts availability).
If the printer is not covered by a service agreement or contract, notify the customer about parts availability issues that will limit the ability to perform printer repairs. Inform the customer about the benefits of HP's Trade Up program, and give them the Trade Up Web site http://www.hp.tradeups.com/login/login.asp. If the customer needs help in locating a local reseller, give them the reseller contact Web site at http://www.hp.com/usa/reseller/index.html. If the customer still requests service and parts are available, follow normal trade call logging processes to avoid escalation. If parts are unavailable for the needed service, do not log a CSO.
The printer cannot define the edges of media being loaded. Common causes for media loading issues are skewed media, unsupported media, or the leading edge of the media not being square (perpendicular). The most common reason for this message is a dirty or malfunctioning line sensor. Follow the steps listed in this document to accurately determine the cause of the failure and replace the appropriate parts.
NOTE: Media must be loaded when using this work instruction. If media is not loading, use the media not loading document bpp90029 (650C Series printers) or bpp90030 (600 Series printers).

NOTE: If any of the troubleshooting steps listed below solve the problem, attempt to verify printer functionality by printing several internal prints. If the printer works, do not replace any other parts.
First, check whether the correct media is being used for these models. Clear or backlit media (without white adhesive on the edges) can cause the error. Verify that the leading edge is square or perpendicular to left and right edges of media.
NOTE: A dirty drive roller can cause paper skewing or slippage. It is imperative the media be positioned perpendicular to the line sensor. A dirty drive roller can also induce reflectivity back to the line sensor, making it difficult for the line sensor to define media edges.
A defective or dirty encoder strip can affect the printer's ability to determine media width. Check the encoder strip for damage, and replace if needed. If the encoder strip is not damaged, clean thoroughly using a lint-free cloth dampened with water, and wipe dry with a dry lint-free cloth. Make sure the printer is turned off before cleaning the strip. Turn the printer on when the display prompts "Ready for media." Then try loading media to see if the problem has been resolved. If the error reappears, continue with the remaining steps.
NOTE: Line sensor may be more accessible if positioned just to the left of the drive roller.
NOTE: If the line sensor is grossly out of calibration, it might be necessary to turn off the printer, and manually insert the media. Make sure to align top edges of media with media entering paper path below. Also ensure the media is aligned with perforated edge guide at right. When aligned, turn the printer on and perform the Edge Sense Calibration.
