End of Support Drawer Statement
Hewlett-Packard guarantees support for five years after the end of production of its large format printers. Since the Designjet 650C has been out of production for a number of years, the parts and sub-assemblies may no longer be available to complete the repair. If the customer has a service agreement or contract follow normal contract call logging processes (regardless of parts availability).
If the printer is not covered by a service agreement or contract, notify the customer about parts availability issues that will limit the ability to perform printer repairs. Inform the customer about the benefits of HP's Trade Up program, and give them the Trade Up Web site http://www.hp.tradeups.com/login/login.asp. If the customer needs help in locating a local reseller, give them the reseller contact Web site at http://www.hp.com/usa/reseller/index.html. If the customer still requests service and parts are available, follow normal trade call logging processes to avoid escalation. If parts are unavailable for the needed service, do not log a CSO.
Introduction
Included in this document are three common Y-axis issues: vertical line straightness (VLS), screeching noise along the
carriage traverse, or knocking/clunking noise on the
carriage traverse. Follow the steps listed below to accurately troubleshoot the issue, and replace the appropriate parts.

Consistent "screeching" noise on
carriage movement
- Press the ACCESS PENS key to move the
Carriage into an accessible position.
- Lift the printer window, and turn the printer off.
- Clean the
carriage slide with a lint-free cloth dampened with water.
- Apply 2-3 drops of NYE oil to soft lint-free cloth, and wipe the carriage rails with oil-moistened
cloth.
- Close the window, and turn the printer on.
- Run the Y-friction test as instructed below.
- If screeching persists while running the Y-friction test, replace front and rear bushings on the carriage.
- Perform the Y-friction test again to check if issue is resolved.
- If no problems are detected, print several internal prints to verify functionality.
Knocking or clunking noise on carriage movement
- Visually inspect the carriage belt for cracks, fraying, or general wear.
- If carriage belt is worn, replace both the carriage belt and small belt at the same time.
- Check the double pulley and idler pulley for damaged teeth or foreign substance. Clean or replace as needed.
- After assembly, clean carriage rods with lint-free cloth dampened with water.
- Apply 2-3 drops of NYE oil to soft lint-free cloth. Wipe carriage slide with oil-moistened cloth.
- Run Y-friction test (procedure outlined at end of this document).
- If still gives knocking or clunking sound during Y-friction test, replace front and rear carriage bushings. Run Y friction test again to verify.
- After running Y friction test, press the PREVIOUS key to go back to Ready mode.
- Run several internal prints to verify functionality.
Vertical lines straightness
- Press the ACCESS PENS key to move carriage into an accessible position.
- Lift the window, and turn the printer off.
- Inspect the encoder strip for damage, and replace if necessary.
- If encoder strip is not damaged, thoroughly clean using a lint-free cloth dampened with water.
- Wipe the encoder strip dry after cleaning.
- Clean carriage rod with a lint-free cloth dampened with water.
- Apply 2-3 drops of NYE oil to soft lint-free cloth and wipe the carriage rod.
- Close the window and turn the printer on.
- Check for VLS by running several internal test prints.
- If VLS persists, turn the printer off.
- Visually inspect carriage belt for cracks, fraying or general wear.
- If carriage belt is worn, replace both carriage belt and small belt at same time.
- Check the double pulley and idler pulley for broken teeth or foreign substance. Clean or replace as needed.
- Replace the front and rear bushings on the carriage.
- Run several internal test prints to verify functionality.
Performing Y-friction test
- Turn the printer on.
- At the Ready prompt, press ENTER.
- Use the arrow keys to scroll to the Utilities menu and press ENTER.
- Simultaneously press the ENTER and UP keys to access the Service test menu.
- Using the ARROW keys, scroll to Y friction test and press ENTER.
- At display prompt, select friction test.
- Following the Y-friction test the printer should display: No cut PWM's xxx, xx, xx, xx. The last three values should not exceed 95. This portion of the test is checking the carriage friction values without the cutter.
- Press the ENTER key; the display should now read: PWM(cut) = xxx. The xxx values should not exceed 125. This portion of the test is checking the carriage friction values with the cutter.
- Press ENTER to exit Y-friction test.
- Press PREVIOUS key until back to Ready state.
