Turn the printer off and remove media (if loaded).
NOTE: Ensure HP supported media is being used. Also, if roll media is being used, verify the roll is positioned and loaded correctly.
Move folder in and out from the far-left side to the right side of media path, checking for obstructions or uneven resistance.
NOTE: The media flag is located in the media path, approximately 4 inches to the left of the white media alignment mark on the entry roller. Check if manila folder is bumping into the flag, and observe resistance at this point in the media path.
At the Ready for paper prompt, attempt to load a sheet of media.
If the error is displayed while loading sheet media, perform a Paper Axis test (listed below). If no error, continue with step 11.
Check media roll for adhesion, foreign substance, or indentation on sides of roll that would prevent media from unraveling freely.
Verify the pinch wheels have approx. a 1/8 inch gap away from drive roller surface with the white ARRS handles lifted. Replace the Pinch arm assembly if any of the pinch wheels are visibly bent or have an uneven gap (refer to pg. 8-73 of the 1000 Series Service Manual).
NOTE:
If removal and installation instructions are needed for reference during any repairs performed, refer to the 1000 Series Service Manual available on the
Computer
Care Web site for review or download.
At the Ready for paper prompt, lift the window and insert a pen cap or other object into window sensor opening (tripping the sensor).
Load roll media and observe the position of the Carriage when the error occurs.
If the error message appears when the Carriage is NOT positioned at the far left, proceed with the Paper Axis test (listed below).
If the error message appears when the Carriage is positioned at far-left position, turn the printer off and continue with step 18.
NOTE: The Carriage engages the clutch assembly when positioned in far-left position. When the clutch is engaged, the ARRS assembly gears become meshed with drive roller (x -axis) gears.
Remove the left cover, and check the clutch assembly and actuator arm for proper engagement.
Check the ARRS assembly and the associated engagement parts.
Ensure proper operation of ARRS assembly by verifying the ARRS rollers turn freely in both directions when clutch is disengaged and that rollers cannot turn when the clutch is engaged.
Turn the printer off using the power switch on the front of printer (do not use the power switch at the back of the printer).
Hold the Color key down and turn the printer on using the front panel switch.
NOTE: Continue to hold down the Color key until the message Initializing is displayed on the front panel.
Once inside the Service Tests menu, use the Arrow keys to scroll to 6 Paper Axis test and press Enter.
A series of messages will appear as the test is being run. When the test is completed, PWM values will be displayed on the front panel.
If the values of the Max. PWM is less than 95 and the Avg. PWM is less than 85, the test has passed (not expected). Verify printer functionality.
If the values of the Max. PWM is more than 95 and the Avg. PWM is more than 85, the test has failed. Continue with step 8.
Verify the X Motor gears are NOT loose, tighten as necessary.
Ohm X Motor, replace as needed (refer to pg. 8-12 of the Service Manual). Following replacement, perform an Accuracy calibration, as instructed below.
Replace the Center Platen. Check the Carriage height with the tool included with the new Center Platen. If the Carriage requires adjustment, follow the instructions provided with the Carriage height tool. Perform a Service Station Calibration and a Color to Color Calibration (listed below).
Attempt to verify functionality by performing several internal test prints.
At the Ready prompt, scroll to the PRINTER SETUP icon and press Enter.
Use Arrow keys to scroll to the Utilities menu, then press Enter.
Once in Utilities, press the Up Arrow and Enter keys together. You will now be in the Service Tools menu.
Using the Arrow keys, scroll to Service Calibrations and press Enter.
Load a D size sheet or roll of HP High Gloss Photo Paper.
NOTE: Media may be larger than D size but must be at least 24 inches wide.
At the Recalibrate prompt, select Create Pattern and press Enter.
The printer will start to print the Accuracy Calibration Pattern and the message Calibrating will appear on the front panel.
Once the Accuracy Calibration Pattern is completed, remove the media.
Select Measure Pattern on the front panel display, and press Enter.
Rotate the pattern so that the edge with the arrows points toward you then reload the sheet with print facing up.
The printer will load the pattern and measure the alignment marks.
In the Service Calibrations menu, scroll to 6 Color to Color cal and press Enter.
Press the Enter key once again, and load E/A0 size HP High Gloss Photo Paper or HP Coated paper.
Press the Enter key when the calibration is complete.
