Clean the line sensor on the Carriage as described below:
Open the Printhead cleaner door and pull the Printhead cleaner tray towards the front of the printer until it stops.
Remove all of the Printhead cleaners. When all cleaners are removed, the tray should be pushed back into the printer far enough to access the underside of the Carriage (the carriage may then be moved to gain better access beneath the line sensor).
Clean the Line sensor on the Carriage using a lint-free cloth dampened with water.
Clean the Mark encoder as instructed below:
If the Mark encoder is visible (left-hand side of Drive roller) clean using a lint-free cloth dampened with water. Following Mark encoder cleaning continue with step 7.
If the Mark encoder is not visible for cleaning, activate the top cover sensor with a folded piece of paper or a pen, then access the Printer Setup Options (Icon of printer on front panel display).
Use the Arrow keys to move the Drive roller, select Stop when the Mark encoder is visible.
Clean the Mark encoder using a lint-free cloth dampened with water.
Turn the printer off then on, and attempt to verify functionality. If the problem persists, continue with the remaining steps.
Clean the encoder strip with a lint free cloth dampened with water. Replace the encoder strip if visibly damaged (refer to pg. 8-34 of the 1000 Series Service Manual).

Care Web site for review or download.
Clean and lubricate the Carriage rail.
Turn the printer on and check for error during initialization.
If no error appears during initialization, perform a Line Sensor Calibration (listed below). Following successful calibration, verify printer functionality (if problems persist following the calibration, continue with step 16).
If the error re-appears, press Enter to continue with initialization process.
Perform a Service Station calibration (listed below). Following a successful Service Station calibration attempt to verify functionality.
If the error continues, replace the Carriage and Trailing cable (refer to pg. 8-44, 8-39 of the 1000 Series Service Manual).
Following replacement, perform the following calibrations: 2. Line Sensor, 3. Service Station, 4. Roller Mark Position, 6. Color to Color, 8. Pen Alignment, and the Carriage Height Calibration (listed below).
At the Ready prompt, scroll to the PRINTER SETUP icon and press Enter.
Use the Arrow keys to scroll to the Utilities menu, and press Enter.
Once in Utilities menu, press the Up Arrow key and the Enter key together. You will now be in the Service Tools menu.
Follow instructions displayed on the front-panel to complete the selected calibration.
When calibration is finished, stay in Service Mode to perform any additional calibrations (if required).
When all required calibrations are complete, return to the main Status display using the Back key.
Loosen the two screws that secure the left door to the Multi-Roll feeder.
Remove the two star screws (Orange) that secure the Front top-cover to the Multi-Roll feeder.
Remove six T-20 screws that secure the left Side cover to the Multi-Roll feeder from the front.
Remove the seven T-20 screws that secure the left side cover to the Multi-Roll feeder from the rear.
Remove the left side cover.
Remove the Right door and Front top cover from the Multi-Roll feeder (follow steps 1 through 5 of the previous section and remove the right door instead of the left).
Remove Six T-20 screws that secure the right side cover to the Multi-Roll feeder from the front.
Remove nine T-20 screws that secure the right side cover to the Multi-Roll feeder from the rear.
Release the cable that is attached to the top of the right side cover.
Remove the right side cover.
