HP Designjet 400 Series Printers - Steady ALIGN MEDIA + MEDIA LEDs (Steady EM)
In this document:
KRS document number: BPP90073
Last updated: 01-May-2002
Minimum skill level: 2
This System Error indicates an Y-axis Shutdown. Some possible causes may be friction or obstruction in the Y-axis, Encoder Strip, Y-axis motor, Belt, Cutter or Electronics Module. Use the steps listed in this document to accurately determine the cause of the failure and replace the appropriate parts.
NOTE: This error may also be caused by the bail not moving properly; if so, refer to the Bail Not Lifting document (bpp90075).

NOTE: The HP Designjet 400 series printers have a very high rate of Cutter assembly failure. Due to this fact, the Cutter assembly must be replaced during any on-site repair (refer to pages 8-21 of the HP Designjet 400 Series Service Manual for teardown procedures). If the Cutter appears OK, it still must be replaced at some point during the service call.
Troubleshooting steps
If parts are replaced or fixed in any of the steps listed below, attempt to verify printer functionality by turning the printer on and printing internal test prints. If functionality is verified, no additional parts should be replaced.
- Turn the printer off.
- Lift the top cover and lower the media lever. Ensure that the Pincharms release the pressure on the paper.
- Carefully move the Carriage and/or Cutter assemblies to home positions.
- Remove paper from the printer.
- Remove any small pieces of paper that may be stuck in paper path.
NOTE: A manila file folder may be inserted into the paper path to clear any obstructions that may be unseen.
- If the obstruction is removed, try loading both roll and sheet (preferably larger than 8.5 x 11) paper two times each to prove functionality.
- If loading media is unsuccessful, or no problem is found with the paper path, continue with the remaining steps.
- Turn the printer on.
NOTE: If the error occurs during the initialization process, the Carriage encoder, Y-axis motor, and Carriage Belt are the most probable causes.
- Load a roll of paper.
- When the Ready LED turns on, press the FORM FEED key.
- The Carriage should move to the right and pick up the Cutter, then cut a small strip of paper and return the Cutter and Carriage to their home positions.
- Repeat the test a few times, as the issue may be intermittent.
Clean/Lube carriage slider rod
- Use a lint-free cloth to wipe all foreign materials from slider rod. Apply two or three drops of lubricant to a clean lint-free cloth and wipe the top and back of the slider rod. Ensure the entire length of rod is lubricated. Move the Carriage and Cutter as needed.
- Manually move Cutter and Carriage along slider rod to lubricate bushings of both assemblies. Move each assembly left and right three to four times.
- Place the Cutter and Carriage Assemblies back to their respective home positions.
- If no other problems are noted, load media and attempt to prove functionality.
- If excessive friction is noticed, apply another application of oil and repeat Steps 2-4.
- If excess friction has been eliminated, continue with the Carriage Axis test (listed below).
- If excess friction still remains, replace the Carriage and Cutter (refer to pages 8-37, 8-21 of the HP Designjet 400 Series Service Manual).
NOTE: If Removal and Replacement instructions are needed for reference during any repairs performed, refer to the HP Designjet 400 Series Service Manual available on the Partner Care Web site for review or download.
- Following replacement, perform an Accuracy Calibration and attempt to verify functionality.
Entering Service mode 1 and 2
- Hold the REPRINT key down and turn the printer on.
- Continue to hold the REPRINT key until LEDs on front panel begin sequencing.
- Press the appropriate key(s) to perform the necessary test.
- Hold the MEDIA SOURCE key down and turn the printer on.
- Continue to hold the MEDIA SOURCE key until LEDs on front panel begin sequencing.
NOTE: Service mode 2 contains tests that need a complete initialization on the printer (same as normal operation mode). If a system error occurs while trying to access Service mode 2, turn the printer off and enter Service mode 1 to complete the necessary test(s).
- Press the appropriate key(s) to perform the necessary test.
Carriage Axis (Y-axis) Test
- Enter Service Mode 1.
- To start the Carriage Axis test press the REPRINT key.
- Carriage should move toward right hand side of printer.
NOTE: The Carriage will continue to move from side to side, over the drive roller.
- A steady Fast LED indicates the test passed. Continue performing the Modular test as instructed below.
- A flashing Fast LED indicates the test failed. Continue with Step 6.
- Gently clean the encoder strip using a lint-free cloth dampened with water.
WARNING: Be careful when working around the Encoder strip as the edges are very sharp and can cause injury.
- Inspect the Carriage belt for excessive wear or damage. Replace belt if needed (refer to page 8-41).
- Rerun the Carriage Axis test.
- If problems persist run the Modular test.
Modular test
- Enter Service Mode 1.
- Press the MEDIA SOURCE key to start the test. Carriage should move toward right side.
- If the test passes all LEDs will be steady. Attempt to verify printer functionality.
NOTE: HP Designjet 430 printers with flash Cartridge LED because test checks all four Carriage slots.
- A flashing Align Media LED indicates the Electronics module (not expected).
- A flashing Fast LED indicates the Y-axis Motor. Replace the Y-axis motor (refer to page 8-18). Following replacement attempt to verify printer functionality.
- A flashing Best LED possibly indicates the Encoder Sensor.
- Open the top cover and manually move the Carriage along the Carriage path while observing the Best LED.
- If Best LED continues to flash when moving Carriage, replace the Carriage assembly (refer to page 8-37).
- Following replacement, perform an Accuracy calibration.
Accuracy calibration
- Place a sheet of polyester film over the top of the printer for approximately 10 minutes to let it stabilize to the environmental conditions. Use a sheet approximately 24 x 36 inches, 61 x 91 cm (D-size). If sheet media is not available, roll media can be used if cut into a 24 X 36 inch sheet. When using polyester film, load it with the matte (dull) side down.
NOTE: If a polyester or matte film is not available use HP Coated media when performing an Accuracy calibration.
- Turn the printer off.
- Press and hold in the MEDIA SOURCE key and turn the printer on (entering Service Mode 2).
- Set the Media Type on the front panel to Coated Paper.
- Load the film with the matte (dull) side down, in portrait orientation.
- When the Ready LED lights up, press the REPRINT key.
NOTE: The Ready LED will begin to flash. Allow several minutes for the printer to complete the calibration print.
- The printer will eject the sheet, and the Load Media LED will light up.
- Unload the sheet from the printer.
- Wait until the ink on the sheet is dry.
- Cut the sheet along the dotted line and reload facedown into the printer, in the direction indicated by the arrows on the calibration plot.
NOTE: The Ready LED will begin to flash. The printer takes less than 10 minutes to read the calibration sheet, calculate the calibration data, and save the data in the EEROM.
- Unload the sheet from the printer.
- The Accuracy calibration is now complete.
- Turn the printer off then on, and verify printer functionality.
