The Bail assembly is not raising correctly or not raising at all. Common causes of Bail problems are paper jams, a broken Bail wire, damage to the Bail assembly, or Carriage positioning issues. Use the steps listed in this document to accurately determine the cause of the failure and replace the appropriate parts.
Parts required (part numbers are subject to change)
NOTE: If Removal and Installation instructions are needed for reference during any repairs performed, refer to the 300 Series Service Manual available on the Partner Care website for review or download.
Troubleshooting Steps
If parts are replaced or fixed in any of the steps listed below, attempt to verify printer functionality by turning the printer on and printing internal test prints. If functionality is verified, no additional parts should be replaced.
- Turn the printer off.
- Lift the
Top Cover and check for a paper jam or other physical obstructions. If a paper jam occurred, lower the media lever and remove the paper. Check that the paper is completely removed by looking for any small pieces in the paper path.
- Ensure that the
Carriage and Manual
Cutter
(if equipped) are in their home positions (Carriage, far left - Cutter far right).
- Manually raise and lower Bail to check for freedom of movement. Check Bail for damage, if necessary replace the Bail assembly (refer to pg. 6-5 of the 300 Series Service Manual). Attempt to verify functionality.
- If no problems with the Bail are found or the problem persists, continue with the remaining steps.
- Check the
Bail Link wire (cable) by pushing or lifting the
Bail Engaging lever tab to the left and releasing it.
- If the
Bail Engaging lever does not spring back to the right, replace the
Bail Link
wire, Bail Engaging
lever, Bail Engaging lever support, and the Bail Engaging lever gear (refer to pg. 6-29 of the 300 Series Service Manual). Following replacement attempt to verify functionality.
- If the
Bail engaging lever springs back to the right or problems persist, continue with the remaining steps.
- Gently clean the
Encoder strip with a lint-free cloth dampened with water. Move the Carriage as needed to wipe the entire length of the strip.
WARNING: The Encoder strip is very sharp, use caution when cleaning.
- If no problems are noted, continue with the remaining steps.
Bail Cycle Test
- Turn the printer off.
- Remove the paper from the printer.
- Ensure the media lever is in the up position and the Top cover is closed.
- Enter Service Mode 1 (instructions listed below).
- When all the LEDs begin to flash, press the SETUP key.
- Monitor the Normal LED for status.
- A steady Normal LED indicates the test passed. Turn the printer off then on, load paper and attempt to verify functionality.
- A flashing Normal LED indicates the test failed. Replace associated Bail parts as needed (parts include the Bail Lift Cam, Bail Lift Cam Gear, Bail cable spring, Clutch assembly, and if necessary the Overdrive assembly gear).
- Following replacement, load paper and verify printer functionality.
Instructions for Entering Service Mode
- Hold the Form Feed key down and turn the printer on.
- Continue to hold the FORM FEED key until LEDs on front panel begin sequencing.
- Press the appropriate key(s) to perform the necessary test.
- Hold the PRINT QUALITY key down and turn the printer on.
- Continue to hold the PRINT QUALITY key until LEDs on front panel begin sequencing.
NOTE: Service mode 2 contains tests that need a complete initialization of the printer (same as normal operation mode). If a system error occurs while trying to access Service mode 2, turn the printer off and enter Service mode 1 to complete the necessary test(s).
- Press the appropriate key(s) to perform the necessary test.
