HP Designjet 300 Series Printers - Paper Loading Issues
In this document:
KRS document number: BPP90095
Last updated: 23-Aug-2001
Minimum skill level: 2
Some of the most common issues for paper not loading are operator error, cover open, pinch arm down, and paper motor. Check to see if the issue is related to roll only or both roll and sheet loads. This is possibly a Rollfeed assembly issue.

Troubleshooting steps
If parts are replaced or fixed in any of the steps listed below, attempt to verify printer functionality by turning the printer on and printing internal test prints. If functionality is verified, no additional parts should be replaced.
- Turn the printer off.
- Open the top cover and lower the Pincharm (media) lever.
- Remove any paper that may be loaded.
- Check for, and clear any obstruction or paper jam in the paper path.
NOTE: A manila file folder may be used to clear the paper path. Start on the right side of the unit to prevent damage to the media sensor.
- Once the obstruction is removed, attempt to load the paper and prove functionality.
- If no obstructions are found and no other problems are noted, continue with the remaining steps.
Sensors test
- Turn the printer off.
- Ensure the top cover is closed.
- Enter Service Mode 1:
- Hold the FORM FEED key down and turn the printer on.
- Continue to hold the FORM FEED key until LED's on front panel begin sequencing.
- Press the Print Quality key to start the test.
- The Coated, Ready, and Roll LEDs are lit when the corresponding sensor is tripped. Insert the paper, open the top cover, or lower Pincharm level to change the LED's. Replace faulty sensors as needed (refer to pages 6-12, 6-15, 6-25 of the 300 Series Service Manual).
NOTE: The sensor for the top cover is part of the Front Panel assembly, and the sensor for the Pincharm assembly is part of the Spittoon.
- Following replacement perform the Sensor test again and attempt to verify functionality.
- If the Sensor test passes and/or the problem persists, continue with the remaining steps.
Media Axis (X-Axis) test
- Turn the printer off.
- Ensure the top cover is closed and the Pincharm lever is up.
- Enter Service Mode 1:
- Hold the FORM FEED key down and turn the printer on.
- Continue to hold the FORM FEED key until LED's on front panel begin sequencing.
- Press the MEDIA TYPE key to start the test.
- A steady Film LED indicates the test passed, continue with the next section (check/replace the Rollfeed assembly).
- A flashing Film LED indicates the test has failed. Replace the X-axis motor (refer to pages 6-26 of the 300 Series Service Manual).
- Following replacement, perform an Accuracy calibration (listed below) and attempt to verify functionality.
- If test passes or the problem persists, continue with the remaining steps.
Check/Replace the Rollfeed assembly
- Remove the paper spindle from the printer.
- Check the right Rollfeed assembly for tension. Spring should be strong, but can be overpowered.
- Push up on the top portion of spring-loaded clamp. It should spring back down immediately when released. If spring tension is too strong replace the right Rollfeed assembly (refer to pages 6- of the 300 Series Service Manual).
- If the Rollfeed assembly moves easily, or does not spring back, replace the Rollfeed assembly (refer to pages 6-8 of the 300 Series Service Manual).
- Verify printer functionality.
Accuracy Calibration
- Place a sheet of polyester film over the top of the printer for approximately 10 minutes to let it stabilize to the environmental conditions. Use a sheet of approximately D-size (24 x 36 in/ 61 x 91 cms). Roll media may also be used. When using polyester film, load it with the matte (dull) side down.
NOTE: If a polyester or matte film is not available use HP Coated media when performing an Accuracy calibration.
- Turn the printer off.
- Press and hold in the PRINT QUALITY key and turn the printer on (entering Service Mode 2).
- Set the Media Type on the front panel to Film.
- Load the film with the matte (dull) side down, in portrait orientation.
- When the Ready LED lights up, press the Accuracy Calibration key.
NOTE: The Ready LED will begin to flash. Allow several minutes for the printer to complete the calibration print.
- The printer will eject the sheet, and the Load Media LED will light up.
- Unload the sheet from the printer.
- Wait until the ink on the sheet is dry.
- Reload the sheet facedown into the printer in the direction indicated by the arrows on the calibration plot.
NOTE: The Ready LED will begin to flash. The printer takes less than one minute to read the calibration sheet, calculate the calibration data, and save the data in the EEROM.
- Unload the sheet from the printer.
- The Accuracy calibration is now complete.
- Verify printer functionality.
