HP Designjet 300 Series Printers - EEROM Model ID Configuration Procedures, Steady Plain + Fast + Error LEDs
In this document:
KRS document number: BPP90096
Last updated: 23-Aug-2001
Minimum skill level: 2
The EEROM Model ID configuration is incorrect. This can happen if a pre-configured board is being reused, the current board is incorrectly configured, or the model ID is not configured. An incorrect model ID can also cause steady Plain + Error + Fast error lights (Steady 135 system error). Use the steps contained in this document to correctly configure the printer's model ID.
Configuration procedures
- Turn the printer off.
- Ensure the top cover is closed.
- Enter Service Mode 1:
- Press the Form Feed key while turning the printer on.
- Hold down the Form Feed key until all front panel LEDs begin flashing (the printer is now ready).
- To configure the printer as an HP Designjet 330, press the Continue Plotting, Cancel and Media Type keys at the same time. Continue with step 6.
- To configure the printer as an HP Designjet 350C, press the Roll/Sheet, Cancel and Media Type keys at the same time. Continue with step 6.
- Turn the printer off.
- Turn the printer on.
- If the error returns, the model ID is not configured. Verify that all SIMMs have been removed and repeat steps 1 through 7.
NOTE: If the model ID is not set after multiple attempts of the configuration procedure, there may be a motor connected incorrectly, or the Model ID needs to be cleared before being configured. Check the motor connections and perform the configuration procedure again. If problems persist, continue with Clearing the Model ID section (listed below).
- If the error does not re-appear, print a Service Configuration plot to verify the model ID was configured correctly (with Ready LED On, load a sheet of paper in portrait orientation and press the Cancel and Media Type keys).
NOTE: The Ready + Data + Media error LEDs may be displayed to indicate that an Accuracy Calibration is required. Press Cancel. If the error cancels, the printer is functioning correctly and the Accuracy Calibration will need to be performed. All covers should be installed before performing any calibrations.
- Perform an Accuracy Calibration (listed below).
- Depending on the image quality, it may be necessary to perform the Black Cartridge Alignment or the Color Cartridge Test sheet.
Clearing the Model ID
- Turn the printer off.
- Remove the right-end cover and unplug the X-motor encoder cable (labeled ENC X) from the connector on the Electronics module.
- Enter Service Mode 1:
- Press the Form Feed key while turning the printer on.
- Hold down the Form Feed key until all the LED's begin flashing (the printer is now ready).
- Press the Roll/Sheet and Print Quality keys simultaneously. The Media Type and Print Quality columns will light up.
- Using a conductive metal tool, such as a screwdriver, short pins 1 and 2 on the ENC X connector on the Electronics module. Pins 1 and 2 are located closest to the back of the printer. While shorting pins 1 and 2, the Media Type and Media Source columns should light up.
- Press the Cancel and Media Source keys.
- Turn the printer off and reconnect the X-motor encoder cable.
- Re-install the right end cover and perform the Configuration Procedure.
Accuracy Calibration
- Place a sheet of polyester film over the top of the printer for approximately 10 minutes to let it stabilize to the environmental conditions. Use a sheet of approximately D-size (24 x 36 in/ 61 x 91 cms). Roll media may also be used. When using polyester film, load it with the matte (dull) side down.
NOTE: If a polyester or matte film is not available use HP Coated media when performing an Accuracy calibration.
- Turn the printer off.
- Press and hold in the Print Quality key and turn the printer on (entering Service Mode 2).
- Set the Media Type on the front panel to Film.
- Load the film with the matte (dull) side down, in portrait orientation.
- When the Ready LED lights up, press the Accuracy Calibration key.
NOTE: The Ready LED will begin to flash. Allow several minutes for the printer to complete the calibration print.
- The printer will eject the sheet, and the Load Media LED will light up.
- Unload the sheet from the printer.
- Wait until the ink on the sheet is dry.
- Reload the sheet facedown into the printer in the direction indicated by the arrows on the calibration plot.
NOTE: The Ready LED will begin to flash. The printer takes less than 1 minute to read the calibration sheet, calculate the calibration data, and save the data in the EEROM.
- Unload the sheet from the printer.
- The Accuracy calibration is now complete.
- Verify printer functionality.
