Troubleshooting stepsback to table of contents

If parts are replaced or fixed in any of the steps listed below, attempt to verify printer functionality by turning the printer on and successfully printing internal test prints. If functionality is verified, no additional parts should be replaced.

  1. Press the Replace Ink System key to move the carriage so printheads can be accessed, if not already accessible.
  2. Open the top cover.
  3. Remove and reseat the suspect printhead(s). Try twice, as contacts might be worn.
  4. A flashing square or square outline will indicate the printhead. If the printhead is good, the square will change to an hourglass, and then a steady square.
  5. If unsuccessful, remove all printheads.
  6. Using a lint free cloth dampened with water, clean all the contacts in each carriage slot and on all printheads. This will remove any dirt or ink that may be preventing a good connection.
  7. Reinstall one printhead at a time and watch the front panel display for the corresponding square to change to a steady square indication. Remove each printhead before inserting another into the carriage.
  8. Continue testing the remaining printheads, with one printhead in the carriage at a time.
  9. If any printheads fail, break the keyed tabs just below the label on front of printhead and insert it into one of the other known good slots.
  1. If printhead still shows bad in second slot, replace the ink system and attempt to verify functionality.
  2. If the printhead shows good in the second carriage slot or replacing the ink system was no help, replace the carriage and trailing cable (refer to pg. 8-42, 8-36 of the Service Manual).
  3. Perform Calibrations C01, C02, C03, C05, C06, C07 (2500/3500 only), and C08 (instructions listed below).
  4. Following calibrations, verify functionality.

Performing Service Calibrationsback to table of contents

Following each calibration, turn the printer off to store the new calibration values in the EEROM. Turn the printer on (entering Service mode) and perform the next required calibration. Repeat this cycle until all necessary calibrations have been performed.

  1. Make sure the printer is turned off from the power switch on the back of the printer.
  2. Hold the Up Arrow key and the Enter key down while turning the printer on.
  1. Once the message "Status/Ready" is displayed on the front panel, press Enter.
  2. Use the Arrow keys to scroll to Utilities and press Enter.
  3. Scroll to Service Tests and press Enter.
  4. Scroll to Service Calibrations and press Enter.
  5. Use the Arrow keys to scroll through the specific calibrations and press Enter when the required calibration is displayed.
