Turn the printer off using the main power switch located on the back of the printer.
Disconnect the data cable from the printer (network or parallel).
Following initialization, attempt to verify functionality by printing internal test prints (Utilities, Test Print).
If no error appears, upgrade firmware; troubleshoot OS, customer file, data connection, and software program (internal printer functionality has been proven).
Upgrade the firmware to the most current version and attempt to verify functionality.
If the problem persists following the upgrade, replace the lens cover (Printer Setup Options, Utilities, Replace Lens Cover).
Attempt to verify functionality. If problems persist, continue with the remaining steps.
Clean the mark encoder located on the drive roller (using a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with water). If the mark encoder (left side of drive roller) is not visible, follow the instructions below:
If the problem persists, ensure the line sensor on the carriage is lighting up in the correct position over the mark encoder. If the carriage (line sensor) is not lighting up when above the mark encoder, clean the encoder strip.
WARNING: Do not instruct customer to clean the encoder strip as it is very sharp and can cause injury.
If the error continues, check the tensioner for damage and replace if necessary (refer to pages 8-42 of the service manual).
WARNING: To prevent possible injury, always remove the power cable from the back of the printer before connecting or disconnecting any internal printer cables or performing any repairs.
If the problem persists, replace the line sensor (located on the carriage assembly).
Following replacement, turn the printer on and allow printer to complete initialization.
Perform the Scan-Axis, Service Station, and Carriage Height calibrations.
Following the calibrations, turn the printer off, then on, and verify printer functionality.
If the problem persists, replace the power supply unit (refer to pages 8-88 of the service manual).
When the READY message is displayed on the front-panel, scroll to the Printer Setup Options icon and press ENTER.
Once inside the Utilities menu, press the Up Arrow key and the ENTER key simultaneously.
Scroll to the necessary menu (Service Tests, Service Utilities, or Service Calibrations) and press ENTER.
Once inside the appropriate menu, scroll to the needed test and press ENTER to start the test.
