Introduction
The
printhead carriage cannot move, or has difficulty moving freely. Common causes are obstructions in the carriage path, excess friction along the carriage path, worn or damaged Y-axis parts, and improperly installed
ink supply
tubes. Switch Power Off, Check Printhead Path (SPOCPHP) messages may appear with or without the numbers 1, 2, or 3 following it (troubleshoot all the same way).
Check Printhead Path 1, 2, or 3 details:
- SPOCPHP (1) - Friction or excess speed shutdown
- SPOCPHP (2) - Safety shutdown (carriage path is blocked)
- SPOCPHP (3) - Friction slowdown of carriage
Follow the steps listed below to determine the actual cause of the error and to replace the necessary parts.
Contact center agents (troubleshooting to be performed with customer)
The steps below are designed to achieve remote resolution of the issue. If the troubleshooting steps below appear to resolve the issue, attempt to verify printer functionality by printing several internal prints. If the issue persists following the steps below, generate a CSO for service.
- Turn the printer off, using the main power switch located on the back of the printer.
- Open the top cover.
- Unload media and check for obstructions in the carriage path, remove as needed.
- If media is jammed, follow the steps directly below. If no media jam is detected, continue with Step 5.
- Slide the
carriage out of the way toward either side of the enclosed ends of the printer (if needed).
- Lift the
pincharm
lever.
- Remove any of the jammed media that is easily lifted up and out from the top of the printer.
- Pull the rest of the roll or sheet down and out of the entry slot where the media is loaded.
- Check around the ends, front, and rear edges of the platen roller to verify that all of the torn media is removed. Use a manila folder to remove jammed media from the media path (take care not to damage the media sensor on the right side of the printer).
- Lower the printer top cover window and the pincharm lever, then turn the printer on. After initialization, select Move Media, via the Media icon, to eject any pieces of media that might still be in the media path.
- Reload the media as normal. If using roll, trim the edge so the media is straight before loading. Also, be sure not to load the media upside down.
- If loading is successful, repeat loading procedure with both roll and sheet media, portrait style (preferably larger than 8 1/2 x 22 inches) two times each, to prove functionality. If everything works well, no parts need to be replaced.
- If loading is unsuccessful or problems persist, continue with the remaining steps.
- Turn the printer off using the main power switch.
- Open the printhead cleaner door, located on the right side of the printer.
- Manually pull the printhead cleaner tray forward (releasing the printhead carriage).
- Lift the top cover window.
- Clean the carriage slider rods and apply oil along the complete axis of the slider rods (3-4 drops on each rod spread on entire rod on top and towards the center of the rod).
- Manually move carriage left and right to help distribute oil under carriage bushings.
NOTE: Ensure the printhead latch is securely fastened down on the carriage. If not properly closed, the latch can impede carriage movement, thus generating the error message.
- Close the top cover window.
- Turn the printer on.
- Load media and attempt to verify functionality by printing a customer file or internal prints.
- If the problem persists, generate a CSO for service (send ALL required parts as listed below).
Parts required (part numbers are subject to change)
CE instructions
If any of the troubleshooting steps (including parts replacement) listed below solve the problem, attempt to verify printer functionality by printing several internal prints. If functionality is verified, no additional parts should be replaced.
- Turn the printer off using the main power switch.
- Open the printhead cleaner door, located on the right side of the printer.
- Manually pull the printhead cleaner tray forward (releasing the printhead carriage).
- Lift the top cover window.
- Clean the carriage slider rods and apply oil along the complete axis of the slider rods.
- Manually move carriage left and right to help distribute oil under carriage bushings. While moving the carriage, visually inspect the carriage belt and tensioner for damage or wear and replace as needed (refer to pages 8-46 of the Service manual).
- Inspect the cutter assembly and fix or replace as needed (refer to pages 8-60 of the Service manual).
- Trip the window sensor using a pen cap or small piece of media.
- Turn the printer on, and enter the Service menu as instructed below.
- Perform a Scan-axis test (Diagnostics menu).
NOTE: Full-width media must be used to perform this test. If printer is 60-inch model and no full-width media is available cut 36-inch media at a length of 60 inches to create a 60 x 36-inch sheet of media.
- If either of the values displayed exceed their respective limits (FORWARDS Maximum PWM 225, BACKWARDS Maximum PWM 230), turn the printer off and lubricate the carriage rails again and re-run the scan-axis test.
NOTE: If the carriage does not move during the scan-axis test, replace the scan-axis motor (refer to pages 8-57 of the Service manual). Attempt to verify functionality before continuing with the remaining steps.
- If the test fails for a second time, replace the carriage and trailing cable (refer to pages 8-46 and 8-36 of the Service manual).
- Following replacement, turn the printer on.
- Access the Service Calibrations menu as instructed below, and perform the Scan-Axis, Service Station, and Carriage Height calibrations.
- Following the necessary calibrations, turn the printer off for at least 30 seconds, and then on and print customer or internal prints to verify printer functionality.
Performing service tests, service utilities and service calibrations
- Turn the printer on.
- When the "READY" message is displayed on the front-panel, scroll to the Printer Setup Options icon and press ENTER.
- Using the Arrow keys, scroll to Utilities and press ENTER.
- Once inside the Utilities menu, press the Up Arrow key and the ENTER key simultaneously.
- Scroll to the necessary menu (Service Tests, Service Utilities, or Service Calibrations) and press ENTER.
- Once inside the appropriate menu, scroll to the needed test and press ENTER to start the test.
