Troubleshooting stepsback to table of contents

If parts are replaced or fixed in any of the steps listed below, attempt to verify printer functionality by turning the printer on and printing internal test prints. If functionality is verified, no additional parts should be replaced.

  1. Turn all light sources directly above the printer off.
  2. Attempt to load media with the lights off. If successful, too much ambient light is being reflected into the line sensor, which is causing the error (disable lighting directly above printer or move printer to a darker location).
  3. If problems persist, continue with the remaining steps.
  4. Turn the printer off, using the main power switch located on the back of the printer.
  5. After 10-15 seconds, turn the main power switch on.
  6. Following initialization, attempt to load media:
    1. If using roll media, ensure the media is loaded onto the spindle correctly (the gap between the right edge of the media roll and the right end spindle hub should be no more than 1/8 of an inch). If using sheet media make sure the media is square. If a Glossy media is being used, try a regular bond paper.
    2. Load the media with the right-hand edge against the blue perforated line on the printer.
    3. Ensure the right-hand edge of the media is not damaged or irregular.
    4. Try loading media.
    5. If successful, unload the media then reload to verify printer functionality (if the issue is media related, try using supported HP media).
    6. If the problem persists, continue with the remaining steps.
  7. Verify the automatic platen cleaning procedure is turned off (Printer Setup Options, Utilities, Clean platen, Automatic clean, Off).
  8. Replace the lens cover located on the line sensor.
  9. Perform a manual alignment procedure (Printer Setup Options, Utilities, Calibrations, Printhead Alignment).
  10. Following the alignment procedure attempt to verify functionality.
  11. If the problem continues, clean the drive roller as instructed below:
    1. Unload any media that is currently loaded into the printer.
    2. Enter the Printer Setup Options menu (the printer icon is on the upper right of the printers front-panel display).
    3. Using the Arrow keys, scroll to Device setup and press ENTER.
    4. Press the Down Arrow key and the ENTER key simultaneously.
    5. Select yes and press ENTER.
    6. Scroll to Service Utilities and press ENTER.
    7. Scroll to 1.1 Turn DRIVE ROLLER and press ENTER.
    8. The drive roller will now begin to turn.
    9. Using a lint-free cloth dampened with water, clean the entire surface of the drive roller.
    10. When complete, press ENTER to exit the calibration.
    11. Following the calibration, attempt to verify functionality. If the problem persists, continue with the remaining steps.
  12. Check the media spindle for damage (bent, or worn right-hand end cap) and replace if necessary. If replaced attempt to verify functionality.
  13. If no problem is found or the problem persists, replace the Line Sensor assembly (refer to page 8-53 of the service manual).
  14. Following replacement, turn the printer on (entering Service mode as instructed below).
  15. Access the Service Calibrations menu and perform the Scan-Axis, Service Station, and Carriage Height Calibrations.
  16. Following the calibrations, turn the printer off, then on, and verify printer functionality.
