HP Designjet CP Series Printers - Printhead Refill Problems

In this document:

Color may begin to print, but drops out during printing. The printer will continue to print as though nothing is wrong. This issue is usually due to an old Ink Delivery System (IDS) or misalignment between carriage and refill assembly. Some other instances include a dirty or damaged encoder strip or service station. Use the steps listed in this document to accurately determine the cause of the failure and replace the appropriate parts.

Clean and check contactsback to table of contents

If parts are replaced or fixed in any of the steps listed below, attempt to verify printer functionality by turning the printer on and successfully printing internal test prints. If functionality is verified, no additional parts should be replaced.

  1. Press Replace Ink System key to move the carriage so the printheads can be accessed, if not already accessible.
  2. Open the top cover.
  3. Remove and reseat the suspect printhead(s), and note the weight of printhead(s). A flashing square or square outline will indicate the printhead. Square should change to an hourglass and then a steady square, if good. Try twice, as the printhead contacts might be worn.
  4. When printer is at a Ready status, press the Enter key.
  5. Using the Arrow keys, select Image Quality and press Enter.
  6. Scroll to Printhead Service, and press Enter.
  7. Select Refill Now and press Enter.
  8. After Refill is complete, press the Replace Ink System key and check weight of printhead. Printhead should feel heavier than before.
  9. If the printhead was not refilled, check refill septum on printhead for an out-of-round ink circle. Usually indicates refill misalignment.
  10. If printhead was not refilled, check refill septum on printhead for out-of-round ink circle. If refill misalignment is suspected, clean and/or replace the encoder strip (refer to pg. 8-32 of the service manual).
  1. Check the expiration date of the printhead (replace any old or expired ink systems before continuing).
  2. If issue has reoccurred after IDS was replaced, check the tubes on the affected ink system.
  1. Replace the affected ink system.
  2. Perform a refill calibration (instructions below).
  3. Following the calibration, attempt to verify functionality.
  4. If the problem persists, replace the refill assembly (refer to pg. 8-55 of the service manual).
  5. Following replacement, perform a C02 Refill Service Calibration and attempt to verify functionality.
  6. If the problem continues, perform a D16. Erase EEROM diagnostic procedure to clear all the previous calibration values stored in the EEROM.
  7. Following the clearing of the EEROM, perform all printer calibrations.
  8. Following successful calibrations, turn the printer off, then on and attempt to verify functionality.
  9. If the problem persists, replace the Electronics module (refer to pg. 8-6 of the service manual).
  10. Following replacement, perform all printer calibrations.
  11. Turn the printer off, then on and verify functionality.

Performing service calibrations and/or diagnostic testsback to table of contents

Following each calibration, turn the printer off to store the new calibration values in the EEROM. Turn the printer on (entering Service mode) and perform the next required calibration. Repeat this cycle until all necessary calibrations have been performed.

  1. Make sure the printer is turned off from the power switch on the back of the printer.
  2. Hold the Up Arrow key and the Enter key down while turning the printer on.
  1. Once the message Status/Ready is displayed on the front panel, press Enter.
  2. Use the Arrow keys to scroll to Utilities and press Enter.
  3. Scroll to Service Tests and press Enter.
  4. Scroll to Service Calibrations or Diagnostics and press Enter.
  5. Use the Arrow keys to scroll through the specific calibrations or diagnostic tests, and press Enter when the required calibration or diagnostic test is displayed.
